Loss of an Eye
Surgical removal of the eye may be necessary following:
- severe trauma
- to control pain in a blind eye
- to alleviate a severe infection inside an eye
- for cosmetic improvement of a disfigured eye.
Enucleation: the surgical removal of the entire eye.
Evisceration: the surgical removal of the contents in an eye.
If either of these procedures needs to be performed, an artificial eye can be made by an ocularist.
