What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid skin is normally smooth, but over time, the eyelid stretches, fat bulges, and muscles weaken. These changes are most often caused by age, heredity, and sun damage. Eyelid surgery is performed to address these issues and achieve effective eyelid rejuvenation.

This procedure in Fort Myers is sometimes also called under-eye bag surgery since it can be performed to reduce the puffy appearance of the lower eyelids by smoothing them out.

Benefits of Eyelid Surgery

  • Youthful Appearance: Reduces drooping, puffiness, and under-eye bags for a revitalized look
  • Improved Vision: Removes obstructive skin that hampers peripheral sight
  • Long-lasting Results: Effects can endure for 5-10 years or more with proper care
  • Minimal Scarring: Incisions are discreetly placed in natural folds or inside the eyelid, with scars fading significantly over time
  • Enhanced Comfort: Alleviates irritation or dryness caused by excess skin

Am I a Good Candidate for an Eye Lift?

The best candidates for blepharoplasty are those who are in overall health, have realistic expectations, and are non-smokers. Smoking can increase the chance of post-surgical complications and must be avoided several weeks before and after the procedure.

Candidates should not have severe eye conditions. Patients who could not achieve significant eye rejuvenation results from non-surgical eyelid treatments are ideal candidates for eyelid surgery. Candidates should commit to a full recovery to avoid complications and achieve ideal results. It is recommended that patients follow a healthy lifestyle and use proper skincare to maintain good results for a long time.

Excellent experience with upper eyelid surgery

Excellent experience with upper eyelid surgery. Entire office very professional. Appointments on time. I went to sleep waiting to go the operating room and the surgery was literally over before I knew it. Had a minor problem after stitches were out; called on a Saturday morning and the Dr. responded, by telephone, within 2 minutes of my contacting the answering service and the issue was resolved. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Laquis.

What to Expect During Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery can last around two hours, depending on the complexity of the surgical plan. Anesthesia will be administered to make the surgery comfortable and pain-free. Tiny incisions will be created, and the chosen eyelid surgery technique will be performed. The incisions will be closed to complete the surgery.

Eyelid Surgery Techniques

Blepharoplasty can be performed on either the upper or lower eyelids. When it is performed on both sets of lids, the upper eyelids are corrected first.

Upper blepharoplasty, or upper eyelid surgery, may be covered by insurance if we can prove that the sagging skin obstructs peripheral vision. The excess skin and fat are removed from a small incision hidden in the natural eyelid crease. If the upper eyelid is droopy, the muscle that raises the lid may need to be tightened.

Lower blepharoplasty, or lower eyelid surgery, can be performed through an incision on the inner surface of the eyelid to remove fat. If excess skin also needs to be removed, a small incision may be made just below the lower eyelid lashes. Laser resurfacing or a chemical peel may be used to further smooth and tighten the lower lid skin.

The Healing Process After Blepharoplasty

Once your blepharoplasty surgery is complete, you will need a ride home from a friend or a family member, since you will not be able to drive on the same day as the procedure. During your recovery period, follow the instructions of Dr. Laquis closely to achieve the best eyelid surgery results possible.

You will experience minor tightness and soreness during recovery. In addition, your eyes may be watery, dry, sticky, itchy, or sensitive to light. Dr. Laquis will provide you with a prescription for these minor symptoms. The eyelid may be swollen or bruised for the first few weeks. Some patients can go back to work after 10-14 days.

Keeping your eyes moist during eyelid surgery recovery is vital. This can be accomplished with the help of prescribed eye drops or topical ointments. Additionally, wearing sunglasses will block wind and pollutants.

Sunglasses can also help prevent sun damage to temporarily weakened eyelids. Wear proper sunscreen and avoid long periods of sun exposure during this time.

How Long Do Eyelid Surgery Results Last?

You’ll begin enjoying visible improvements two weeks post-surgery as swelling diminishes. Scars will gradually fade, becoming almost invisible within months and typically remaining well-concealed in natural creases. Complete healing and definitive results typically finalize around six months. While natural aging continues, surgical benefits often last ten years or longer, especially with consistent skincare and sun protection.

How Much Does Eyelid Surgery Cost?

While your health insurance company may cover functional blepharoplasty to some degree, purely cosmetic eyelid surgery is not. The price of this procedure in Fort Myers will be impacted by the techniques used, the overall time the procedure takes to perform, and many other factors.

We offer a financing option through Prosper Healthcare Lending to aid with eyelid surgery costs.
